Buy Quince Trees from Ty Ty Nursery

Quince trees are hardy, low-maintenance fruit producers—but a little spring attention goes a long way toward boosting blooms and fruit yield. Here are the top 5 things you should do this spring to ensure your quince tree thrives all season long.

1. Prune for Shape, Health & Airflow

Before bud break, prune your quince tree to:

  • Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches,
  • Thin out the center to improve air circulation,
  • Encourage strong lateral growth.

Proper pruning reduces disease risk and supports better fruit production.

2. Apply Dormant Oil and Fungicide

Quince trees can be susceptible to leaf spot, rust, and fire blight. Apply a dormant oil spray and copper fungicide in late winter or early spring to prevent overwintering pests and fungal issues.

Apply on a calm, dry day with temps above 40°F.

3. Feed With a Balanced Fertilizer

Apply a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer around the drip line of the tree. For organic growers, compost, worm castings, or aged manure are great options. Feeding early in the season supports healthy shoot and bud development.

4. Mulch to Protect and Nourish

Weed around the base and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to:

  • Retain soil moisture,
  • Suppress weeds,
  • Feed the soil with organic matter.

Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to avoid rot.

5. Inspect for Graft Issues or Suckers

Look for:

  • Suckers growing from below the graft union,
  • Winter damage or sunscald cracks,
  • Loose ties or stakes on young trees.

Removing suckers ensures the energy goes to the fruiting portion of the tree.
