Buy Plum Trees from Ty Ty Nursery

Plum trees reward good spring preparation with lush blooms and a heavy fruit set, but timing and technique are everything. Whether you grow Japanese or European varieties, the following five tasks are essential to maximize productivity, disease resistance, and fruit quality.

1. Conduct Strategic Dormant Pruning

Early spring—before bud break—is the ideal time to prune. Remove:

  • Dead, diseased, or damaged wood (the 3 D’s),
  • Any crossing branches to open the canopy and improve airflow,
  • Vertical suckers and low lateral growth.

Focus on scaffold training to encourage a strong, open structure that supports fruit weight and maximizes light penetration. This also reduces brown rot and black knot risk by enhancing circulation.

2. Apply a Targeted Dormant Spray

Just before buds swell, apply a dormant oil spray to combat overwintering pests like aphids, scale insects, and mites. For fungal prevention (e.g., shot hole, leaf curl, brown rot), use a copper-based fungicide or lime sulfur solution. Always follow label instructions and avoid spraying during freezing temperatures.

3. Feed the Tree with Purpose

Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10 or similar) or a formulated fruit tree blend high in nitrogen to support vigorous spring growth. Apply it in a donut pattern around the drip line—not against the trunk—and water thoroughly. For organic systems, composted manure or fish emulsion is excellent.

4. Mulch and Weed Management

Clear away old mulch and weeds from the base of the tree. Then apply 2–3 inches of fresh mulch—like pine bark, wood chips, or shredded leaves—to:

  • Regulate soil temperature,
  • Retain moisture,
  • Suppress weed competition, and
  • Feed soil biology.

Avoid piling mulch against the trunk to prevent rot.

5. Inspect for Structural and Graft Health

Check for:

  • Trunk girdling, rodent damage, or sunscald cracks,
  • Loose ties or damaged stakes in younger trees,
  • Healthy graft unions, ensuring no suckers are emerging from below the graft.

Early detection of these issues helps redirect energy to productive growth and avoids major structural problems later in the season.
