🍈 Best Paw Paw Tree Varieties for Backyard Growers

There are many paw paw varieties, but selecting the right one for your climate and taste preference is key! Here are three excellent options for home orchards:

1. Allegheny Paw Paw (Grafted) 🌲

Chill Hours: 400-600 hours
Pollination: Requires a second paw paw variety for cross-pollination
Fruit Description: Medium-sized, yellow-green fruit with orange flesh
Flavor & Texture: Sweet, mango-banana flavor with a soft, creamy texture
Best Uses: Fresh eating, smoothies, and desserts

The Allegheny Paw Paw is an early-ripening variety with exceptionally sweet fruit and smooth texture. It is grafted, meaning it produces larger, more reliable harvests than seed-grown trees.

2. Shenandoah Paw Paw (Grafted) 🌿

Chill Hours: 500-700 hours
Pollination: Requires another paw paw variety for cross-pollination
Fruit Description: Large, oval-shaped fruit with pale yellow flesh
Flavor & Texture: Mild, sweet, and creamy with tropical notes
Best Uses: Fresh eating, fruit salads, and making ice cream

The Shenandoah Paw Paw is known for producing extra-large fruit with fewer seeds, making it a favorite among home gardeners. As a grafted variety, it has superior fruit quality and faster production.

3. Our Select Paw Paw (Non-Grafted) 🍃

Chill Hours: 500-800 hours
Pollination: Needs another paw paw tree for cross-pollination
Fruit Description: Medium to large fruit with rich, custard-like flesh
Flavor & Texture: Strong tropical fruit flavor with hints of banana and vanilla
Best Uses: Baking, fresh eating, and smoothies

The Our Select Paw Paw is a non-grafted seed-grown tree, meaning it takes longer to produce fruit than grafted varieties but still offers excellent taste and natural growth vigor.

🌡️ Chill Hours & Pollination

🌿 What Are Chill Hours?
Chill hours refer to the number of hours below 45°F that a tree needs during winter to properly break dormancy and produce fruit.

🌸 Pollination Needs

  • All paw paw trees require cross-pollination, meaning you need at least two different varieties for fruit production.
  • Hand pollination is often necessary in backyard settings since natural pollinators (beetles and flies) are not always reliable.

For the best results, plant two or more different paw paw varieties within 15-20 feet of each other.

🌳 How to Plant Paw Paw Trees

📍 Best Location to Plant

Partial to Full Sun: Young paw paw trees prefer partial shade, but mature trees produce best in full sun.
Well-Draining Soil: Prefers loamy, fertile soil, but adapts to various conditions.
Spacing: Plant trees 15-20 feet apart to allow for proper growth.

🌱 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

1️⃣ Dig a hole twice the width and the same depth as the root ball.
2️⃣ Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the graft union is above soil level.
3️⃣ Backfill with soil and water thoroughly to settle the roots.
4️⃣ Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

🌞 Ongoing Care & Maintenance

💧 Watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy—paw paws prefer consistent moisture.
✂️ Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape the tree and remove dead wood.
🍂 Fertilizing: Use Nutra-Pro 1st Year Fertilizer Paks for strong root development.

do I need a male & female for fruit or just 2 different cultivars? What size do you sell them & how tall / wide do they grow? Thanks

Yes, when planting pawpaw trees, you will need two different varieties for successful cross-pollination and fruit production. Planting two of the same variety typically won’t result in fruit, so variety diversity is key!

my paw paws just arrived (3) . They do look totally dormant. No visible evidence of life or greenery showing. I’ve unpacked then. I see only general tree planting advice, nothing specific to paw paws. My question is: are the trees as they have arrived, ready for direct planting into the ground? Is there any wake up period where the roots need to be soaked in water for Any length of time (as they do appear to be fully dormant or maybe haven’t even survived the shipping process)

Great question—and totally understandable! 🍈 Paw paw trees do often arrive looking completely dormant, especially early in the season. They’re very slow to break dormancy, so what you’re seeing is completely normal.

      Here’s what to do:

✅ Yes, they’re ready to plant!
You can plant them directly in the ground as soon as you receive them.

Before planting, we recommend soaking the roots in water for 1–2 hours—not overnight. This helps rehydrate them after shipping.

🌱 Don’t panic if there’s no green yet:
Paw paws are notorious for breaking dormancy later than other fruit trees—sometimes taking several weeks even after planting.

You can gently do a scratch test near the base: if the cambium layer under the bark is green, the tree is alive and just needs time.

      🌿 Pro Tips:
Plant in partial shade if they’re still small—they need protection from harsh sun while young.

Water daily for the first few weeks, especially if conditions are warm and dry.

If you have any concerns or if they don’t leaf out after a few weeks, feel free to reach out. And don’t forget—your plants are covered by our one-year Plantsurance Guarantee. 💚
