1. Prune for Strength and Health
Late winter to early spring—before new leaves emerge—is the ideal time to prune:
- Remove dead, diseased, or storm-damaged limbs,
- Thin crowded branches to improve airflow,
- Train young trees with a central leader for long-term structure.
Avoid over-pruning; hickories grow slowly and prefer minimal cuts.
2. Clean Up Fallen Debris
Old husks, twigs, and leaves from the previous season can harbor overwintering pests and fungal spores. Rake up and remove debris from around the tree’s base to prevent early-season infestations.
3. Apply a Balanced Fertilizer
Hickories benefit from a slow-release or balanced fertilizer (like 10-10-10) applied in early spring. This supports root growth, budding, and healthy foliage.
Spread the fertilizer evenly beneath the canopy and water it in well. For organic growers, compost or aged manure works great too.
